Pastel by Rodolphe Duguay

Winter scene painted in pastel by Rodolphe Duguay (1891-1973). This is a small work measuring 4.5 by 6 inches.

Duguay was born in Nicolet in April 1891. Painter, draftsman, engraver and illustrator, he began his studies with the Brothers of the Christian Schools. In 1911, he moved to Montreal and began his classes at the Conseil des Arts et Manufactures which is now the National Monument. He also frequents the Association of Montreal. He exercises his talents with Georges Delfosse in the latter’s workshop. It was in 1918 that Rodolphe Duguay met the painter Marc-Aurèle de Foy Suzor-Coté, he remained with the painter until his departure for Europe in 1920. During this period, he executed forty works signed Suzor-Coté. He then left for Europe in the company of the painter Narcisse Poirier, upon his arrival he enrolled at the Académie Julian.

He stayed in Europe for almost seven years and visited around fifteen different cities. On his return to Canada, his father built his workshop for him based on the model of his Parisian workshop. In 1935, he presented an exhibition of wood engravings. In 1973, just before his death, he received the Order of Canada.
