Bronze miniature “Dancing Faun of Pompeii”

Bronze reduction of the “Dancing Faun”, a famous sculpture that gave its name to the house that houses it. It is in Pompeii, in the central basin of an atrium, that the statue of the dancing faun is placed.

Discovered in 1830, this house is in fact one of the largest and most beautiful currently excavated in Pompeii, with an area of approximately 3000 m2 and a great wealth of decorations.

The original work made in Greece during the second century BC was used until 79 AD, when the eruption of Vesuvius buried the city. The ashes of the volcano have preserved many works of art, hence the exceptional state of conservation of this statue.

The naked faun is represented here with his arms raised forward, his head slightly tilted back. Standing on tiptoe, he seems about to begin his dance. Its horns and satyr tail associate it with the god Pan or the cult of Dionysus.

The original is currently kept at the Archaeological Museum of Naples. The statue visible in the atrium of Pompeii is a reproduction. The one proposed here would have been made between 1920 and 1950.
